elevation from a low of 1,600 up to 4,784 feet above sea
level. The highest point in Georgia is Brasstown Bald on
the Union-Towns County line.
Union County covers 330 square miles
and is ranked 89th of Georgia' 159 counties in size. Of
its total 104,736 acres, approximately half is national
forest land.
The climate in most of Union
County has a moderate climate, with distinct seasonal
changes, comfortable summers, and occasional winter
snow. At the summit of Brasstown Bald, the climate is
more similar to Massachusetts than Georgia. with summer
temperatures never rising above 84 degrees.
Union County community
hospital in Blairsville provides a range of specialized
medical care and 24 hour emergency room service. A new
state of the art cancer center has opened in the last few
months.
Atlanta is only two hours
away on four lane highway (Hwy 515). Other major cities
within 100 miles include Chattanooga (TN), Ashville (NC),
and Greenville (SC).
The Blairsville Municipal
Airport has a new paved and lighted 5,000 X 100 foot
runway. Also other new development. For commercial
flights, Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is 95 miles
away and Atlanta's Hartsfield International is 119 miles
to the South.
